“If you build it, they will come…” | Kinston, NC
Historic Grainger Stadium stands, missing its occupant, in downtown Kinston, North Carolina. Most recently the home of the Kinston Indians, the Cleveland Indians High-A minor league affiliate, the team relocated this season. It’s currently being used for high school and community college baseball games. Regardless of who is playing on the field, it’s a great place to watch baseball and must be a bigger thrill to play on its grass.
I have only visited a handful of minor league ballparks, most of them very new, but the first game I saw at Grainger Stadium felt different. Built in 1949, The stadium has an old time charm and feel to it that is hard to describe. A lot of people’s fingers are crossed for a new team to move in. In my opinion, it would be awesome if a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate re-joined the Carolina League and called Kinston home!

As a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Sunday’s loss at the hands of the Denver Broncos stings…a lot. But, at the end of the day it’s just a game and life goes on. My hat goes off to Tim Tebow and the Broncos team. I’ll be rooting for them the rest of the way out.
Today’s photo is a lens corrected 8mm view of Heinz Field, home of the Steelers. I feel like the angle of this shot gives the feel that this is in the rearview, saying goodbye for the year. Until next season, farewell black and gold.
The shot: Nikon D90, 8mm Rokinon lens. 3 exposure HDR, manually masked with original three exposures. Lightroom 3 for lens correction, exported to Photomatix to tonemap, final masking in Photoshop CS4.

Before I get started, I just realized this is my fourth straight Pittsburgh related photo post. This wasn’t planned at all, in fact I really would have preferred to break it up a little. It just turns out that I had such a successful time shooting this trip that I have a ton of new material to share. Hopefully you can use these images to get an idea of how great the city is, if you’ve never been there. It’s an amazing place, really!
Today’s photo, like the previous few, was shot during a morning photowalk with Dave DiCello of HDR Exposed Photography and Ben Beard of Ben Beard Photography. We ventured around the North Shore between the stadiums and downtown getting some predawn shots of the city before heading back toward Heinz Field and our cars. As we reached the stadium, we had a brief moment of clear sky and I was able to shoot a few brackets with my wide angle lens before the grey skies returned.
With the Steelers (hopeful) run to the Super Bowl this year set to begin with a Wild Card Playoff game in Denver against the Broncos and Tim Tebow on Sunday, I thought this was a perfect photo to share. If you’ve followed me for any time, you’re well aware of my allegiance to the Pittsburgh Steelers. If you’re with me, join me in saying “Go Steelers!”
The Shot: 3 exposure HDR. Nikon D90, 8mm Rokinon lens (f/16, 1/250sec, ISO 100). Tripod held, remote fired. Improted into Lightroom 3 for tweaking and JPEG conversion, tonemapped in Photomatix Pro, masked with three original exposures in Photoshop. Finished with some area-specific tweaks with Nik Color Efex.
