The Wait | Pittsburgh, PA
During my last visit to Pittsburgh, I got to take in the city from a new vantage point- The West End Overlook. Dave DiCello, of HDR Exposed Photography, and I traveled up to get a good view of the city. Unfortunately it was windy, rainy and COLD. The wind was blowing the clouds across the sky very quickly and we knew that eventually an opening in the clouds may shine a beam of light onto downtown. At least that’s what we thought. In the distance, we saw a gap in the clouds and knew it was only a matter of time. We waited and waited, then waited some more. Finally the gap, now a tiny sliver, reached the city shining a singe ray of light on the the right side of this frame. It just missed the city. The wait was over, but at least we got some material to take away from our trip up to the overlook.

Pictured is Fifth Avenue Place in Pittsburgh, rising above the Roberto Clemente Bridge. You may or may have not seen some awesome images this past summer of this building sporting a bat signal as The Dark Knight Rises was being filmed in the city. This was shot during a predawn photowalk with Dave DiCello and Ben Beard over the Christmas holiday.
I shot this with my Nikkor 50mm lens with a 20 second exposure at f/22. I love the detail and the shape of the flares that this lens is capable of creating. I admittedly don’t use it much, but these cityscapes make for a great time to break it out of the bag.
The Shot: Nikon D90, Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens. Single exposure, 20 seconds, f/22, ISO 200.
Back Home | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

In just a few short days, I’ll be headed back ‘home’ to Western Pennsylvania. Living so far away now, I’ve grown to really cherish the few short weeks I get to spend in the Pittsburgh area each year. Being around family and friends that I miss so dearly is wonderful and spending time in downtown Pittsburgh is almost magical. I say it all the time, but it’s amazing how much I took the area for granted when I lived there. Rarely would I venture into the city, when I did, it was simply to go to a Pirates or Steelers game and then immediately go back home. When I visit now, I have to drink it in. I grab my camera and a friend or two and we spend hours shooting around town. One of the best parts about being as present in social media as I try to be is that I’ve met a few great folks who shoot a similar style of photography as I do and who live in the Pittsburgh area. Each time I return home it seems like I have ‘new old’ friends to hang out with. With the plans to shoot, visit friends and hang out with family during this trip, I might have to extend my visit for a few days :-)
The shot: Nikon D90, 18-105mm VR lens. 3 exposures, handheld. Merged in Photomatix and finished in Photoshop CS4.

I Love This City | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
I’m going back to Pittsburgh for today’s photo. I don’t know what more to say than, ‘I love this city.’ It’s so strange to me that in the 24 years that I lived there, I spent very little time exploring the city. Now that I’ve moved over 500 miles away, I find myself wishing that I had. Every time I visit home I make sure to take at least one photowalk around the city. This image was shot on one such walk. The Roberto Clemente Bridge is in the foreground and behind it, PNC Park. Perfect.
The Shot: Three exposures, hand held. Tonemapped in Photomatix and finished in Photoshop using Nik Color Efex and Viveza plug-ins.

Over the River… | PNC Park, Home of the Pirates
One of my favorite photo ops when I visit home is PNC Park. I’ve been a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan and ever since their new home opened in 2001, I have not been able to get enough of it. Normally, I shoot it from up close or from the Roberto Clemente Bridge (on the right of the frame). This time, I shot the stadium from the top of a parking garage on the opposite side of the river. This was after a game against the Red Sox, so the fans had already left. I would have loved to have gotten a shot from this vantage point while the stadium was full, but I was inside as well on the first base line.
The shot: Three exposure HDR, tonemapped in Photomatix Pro, finished in Photoshop CS4 using Nik Color Efex Pro and Nik Viveza.
