‘Painted Snow’ Limited Edition Print Release
I am proud to announce the release of my image, Painted Snow, as a limited edition of 50! The photo is printed on 8” x 10” 100% cotton rag paper. The thick, textured stock is a high quality, museum grade paper that gives a great feel to the snowy calmness of the image. Each print is signed, numbered and dated and includes a Certificate of Authenticity card which is also signed and numbered to match the print. The first 5 prints in the series are Artist Proofs and are specially marked with an ‘AP.’
I’ll try to keep a running tally here for easy reference of availability:

I’ve been working hard at this for several days now as I try to complete it. Very much planning on having this in hand by Christmas, at least that’s the goal. We all know how that can change :-)
The plan was originally for this to be simply a photo book. As I’ve been working on it, I find myself adding tips and other tidbits of photography info in there. By no means is it a how-to manual for photography, but I feel that it can offer something for anyone, whether you just want to look at some images or if you want to learn something.
The images in the book all involve Eastern North Carolina. When I was planning the book, I had a hard time deciding if I should include shots from places I’ve traveled to this year such as Pittsburgh, PA, Colorado Springs, CO and Chincoteague, VA. I decided to concentrate on my new home area for the one though. The photos range from the Outer Banks of NC all the way down to Wilmington, NC. That being said, most of the book is not of landmarks, but of the skies, sunsets, sunrises and scenery of the region.
I’ll share more info as it is available, enjoy the early sample!
‘Marsh Rays’ | New Bern, North Carolina
Yesterday was pretty much cloudy, dreary and rainy all day long- or tous photographers, the perfect day to be on the lookout for a sunset. I’ve grown to dread cloudless, sunny days. I’m always on the lookout for clouds in the forecast. Particularly lately, as cold fronts have moved into the area with the arrival of fall, we’ve had some pretty neat sunsets. There’s nothing better than the light that is created during those brief moments when the setting sun pokes through those clouds.
I don’t typically shoot landscapes in a portrait orientation, mainly because I don’t think they look as good on a widescreen or in print. However, I found that the best way to portray this scene was to shoot that way. I was right at the edge of the marsh and the only way to get the reflection in the water was to turn my camera. I really like the way the tops of the marsh grass are illuminated by the warm light of the sun’s rays here; they’re actually the reason I shot this scene. I scouted it out a few evenings earlier and knew the next time we had this kind of sunset, I’d be there!
The Shot: Nikon D90, tripod mounted and remote fired. 3 exposures, tonemapped in Photomatix and masked back with original layers in Photoshop. Tweaked the image a bit with Nik Color Efex and Viveza. I then used the sharpening method I’ve described before (still need a name for it) in which I’ll convert the image to black and white using Nik Silver Efex with a yellow filter. Then change the blend mode of that layer to ‘Luminosity’ and mask as needed. Finsihed with a very slight Glamour Glow and exported.

The Courtesy Press | Pollocksville, NC
Recently, I have had the pleasure to do some work with and get to know the folks at The Courtesy Press in Pollocksville, NC. There, they use a vintage 1917 letterpress to create unique, smart and classy paper products. (I am really looking forward to having some business cards pressed by them in fact!) If it is printed on paper, they can do it. I’ve seen examples of note cards, wedding stationary, posters, fine art, etc, etc in their shop. I’ve also been able to see the press in action a few times and must say, it is such a neat process to witness. You can connect with The Courtesy Press here; you’ll find links to various sites including their Etsy store there. If you’re in the area, I’m sure they’d love to give you a letterpress demonstration if you stopped by!
Their workshop is housed in a beatiful old building that was once the town bank. It makes a great location to shoot photos! I can’t wait to get back in there with a wider angle lens. The vintage look of the place just screamed black & white HDR, so that’s what I did for this image. I also shot many close up detail shots while I was there. Head over to their page to check ‘em out!
