February 2012’s Desktop Wallpaper Calendar
Occasionally I’ll have some trouble picking what image will be featured on the next month’s desktop calendar. As you know, I choose my favorite shot from the month before. January was a great month in that I got a lot of ‘keepers’ as I call them; solid shots that are portfolio worthy. Any month where I have more than one or two is considered a highy successful month.
You can see the original post and image here.
‘Wet Feet’ is now available as the newest installment in my Limited Edition Gallery Series. You can see more information on that here.

Pictured is Fifth Avenue Place in Pittsburgh, rising above the Roberto Clemente Bridge. You may or may have not seen some awesome images this past summer of this building sporting a bat signal as The Dark Knight Rises was being filmed in the city. This was shot during a predawn photowalk with Dave DiCello and Ben Beard over the Christmas holiday.
I shot this with my Nikkor 50mm lens with a 20 second exposure at f/22. I love the detail and the shape of the flares that this lens is capable of creating. I admittedly don’t use it much, but these cityscapes make for a great time to break it out of the bag.
The Shot: Nikon D90, Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens. Single exposure, 20 seconds, f/22, ISO 200.
Weathering Storms | near Stonewall, NC

This is the latest installment of my on-going ‘Abandoned NC’ project in which I am documenting rural abandonment primarily in Eastern NC. I came across this old boathouse near Stonewall, North Carolina. It’s hard to say how many storms this old structure has weathered over the years. I had seen it before but never had a chance to stop by and shoot it. I set out with the plan to add it to my project, but on the way it donned on me that it may not even be there anymore being that it is located in an area that was heavily impacted by Hurricane Irene in the summer. But, as I turned the corner, there she was. Standing there the same as always. It is amazing to me that things can sometimes be discarded as ‘useless’ or ‘junk’ but survive long beyond anyone’s expectations. That’s the essence of what I’m hoping to capture in this series; before these structures actually do succumb to Mother Nature, as they are certain to do someday.

The shot: Nikon D90, 18-105 VR lens. f/16, ISO 200. 3 exposures, merged in Nik HDR Efex Pro and finished in Photoshop CS4.
Candid Thoughts of a Photographer- Validation
I don’t do this often here, but I feel inclined to write today. The thoughts that I’m about to share may not necessarily be the same as all photographers and artists, but I suspect that many, if not the majority, share the same sentiments as I do. I just hope this doesn’t come across as conceited, cocky or what have you. I’m just trying to very candidly share my thoughts and feelings of what I’ve done, how I’ve gotten here and how I want to get to where I’m going (wherever that is). Now that I’ve probably confused everyone with that last sentence, I hope you take a few minutes to read this and please, share your thoughts with me here, on Twitter, Facebook or where ever else you find me!
If you follow me on Twitter and Facebook, then you’ve seen me share and discuss the topics of photo sharing, copyright infringement and related topics here and there over recently. I’ve found the need to deal with people using my work commercially and for their own purposes and promotion without giving me due credit or receiving licensing permission to be on a steep incline over the past few months. I guess that, in a round about way, it validates my work as a photographer and creative person when people begin to use your work. Permission granted or not, when you think about it it becomes pretty flattering that people want or need to use your work when there is so much out there to choose from. My policy from day one has been to be very open to folks using my work. I even have a tab on this website that describes usage rules in pretty good detail. It’s just a shame that so many people, many of whom should know better, think that images posted online are a free-for-all and have no understanding of the rights that photographers inherently have.
December 2011 Wallpaper Calendar
For these I usually use my favorite image from the previous month. This time though, I thought it would be more appropriate to use a holiday themed photo from last December. If you’ve ever visited New Bern during Christmas, you know that downtown does a great job of decorating and getting into the holiday spirit!
There are a couple of options to download this image. First, click on the little icon in the right corner of the image to view it full size. Then you can right click on it and set it as your background or save it and set it from your local file. If you’re finding the quality isn’t what it should be, you may have a higher-res screen. For those of you, go here and download the highest res file. As always, it’s FREE. Share it with your friends and have a great holiday!
