Jagged Pier | New Bern, NC
This fishing pier, located in Lawson Creek Park in New Bern, still shows the scars of last summer’s Hurricane Irene. The storm surge entered the area and appears to have lifted the pier right out of the bottom of the river. I have wanted to shoot this for a while now. The way the lines sort of zig zag up and down is really neat. This particular day, the water was nice and choppy and ready to be smoothed out by a long exposure!
This is a 30 second exposure shot through a 10-stop ND filter.
The Year’s Best - 2011
I wanted to put together a little collection of my favorite images of 2011. They’re in a slideshow format, so there isn’t a big write up of commentary and technical details with each one—just what you see in the captions. So take a look, most of them should be familiar to you but there are some there that may not!
“2011 was a year in which I grew immensely in photography.” That’s something I say every year, except with 2009, 2010, etc. at the beginning. I think that for the rest of my life, I’ll probably be saying the same thing too. That is the great thing about photography, you’ve always got to be evolving, changing and adapting and that suits me very well.
This year I had the great fortune of traveling to some great new places, shooting some great new perspectives of old haunts and even getting in some portrait work. I’ve me some amazing people along the way and loved every bit of it.
I had a tough time trimming the list down, but my blog helped out by limiting the number of images I could include in the slide show :-)
Calming Waters | New Bern, NC
To call it ‘the calm before the storm’ would be a bit cliche, but that’s what it really is. Hurricane Irene is set to hit here in less than 36 hours and people are preparing. I set out early this morning to shoot the sunrise along the water in New Bern and was really surprised at the calmness of the river. I’m sure it won’t stay that way for long. As the swells build in the ocean, they’ll push back into the river and it’ll get quite choppy. That being said, I wasn’t disappointed in the water’s stillness! Just as the sun came up, there was a moment of great clarity in the sky. Coupled with the water, it made for a very pretty scene.
Stay tuned on the Facebook page and by following me on Twitter, I’ll be out and about tomorrow as Hurricane Irene nears and will be uploading some photos on the fly. Stay safe!

Fun In The Sun | Atlantic Beach, NC
With Hurricane Irene now a category 3 storm as she nears our coast, I felt today was a good day to post a calm and relaxing beach scene. In contrast to how deserted the beach will look in the coming days, it was quite packed on this weekend. The high clouds made for the perfect sky.
The shot: Three exposure HDR, merged in Photomatix Pro. Photoshop CS4 + Nik Color Efex + Nik Viveza.
