‘Reach Out’ | Atlantic Beach, NC
As the days get longer and warmer, there are times when it feels as if we are closer to the sun than ever. On occasion, that can look a bit more literal than just saying it. On this particular evening, the sun dropped out from below the clouds and seemed to hover momentarily just above the horizon. Before it dropped below the ocean, it almost felt like you could just reach out and grab the sun in the palm of your hand.

Entry | Atlantic Beach, NC
It’s been a great while since I’ve shared a beach sunset, in fact, it’s been a while since I’ve shot one. But, I’ve had this one in my pocket for a few weeks and felt now was a good time to share.
This was shot on Atlantic Beach, near the Oceanana Pier early this spring. As the sun was setting, I could tell by the streaking low clouds that it was going to be a colorful one. Using a wide angle lens, I was able to get the entire span of the cloud’s arch in the shot. I love how it feels like it’s creating an entry way, a path down the beach. Come on in!
The Shot: Nikon D90, Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 lens. Tripod held, remote fired. f/16, 2”, ISO-200.
The Blaze | Atlantic Beach, North Carolina
Lately, the post-sunset light has been my favorite time to shoot. You can stretch out some long exposures while still preserving some of the color (particularly the blue) in the sky. This night was one of those nights. I loved how the clouds were blowing across the sky layered on the blue sky that was showing through. The sun, which had just dropped below the horizon, reflected upward making a blazing orange and red sky. Low tide made for some great reflections in the foreground.

This was one of those sunsets that come along ever so often where the scene changes by the second. The colors shifted so quickly and so drastically. It seemed like at one moment (like this one) there were a lot of blues and greens in the sky but soon after, the sky turned a blazing red, orange and purple. Lots more to come from this sunset.
The shot: Nikon D90, 8mm f/3.5 Rokinon lens. f/22, ISO-100, 2” exposure. 3 exposures, tonemapped and manually masked together in Photoshop.
Happy Valentine’s Day
I thought that in the spirit of today, I’d add a little quote to a previously uploaded image. I was shooting a sunset on the beach when I noticed a couple embracing along the shore. I was able to snap a frame before they continued their sunset walk on the beach.
Hope you all have a great day with your loved ones!
