New Bern’s 300th Jubilee
This past weekend the town of New Bern, NC celebrated it’s 300th Anniversary. New Bern was first settled in 1710 and was named after the capital of Switzerland, Bern. I had the good fortune of moving to New Bern in January of 2010, just as the 300th Jubilee was getting underway. The celebration culminated last weekend in the 3 day long Jubilee Weekend. Below are some photos of the various events that occurred during the celebration.

Friday night featured a performance of the NC Symphony Orchestra on the lawn of Tryon Palace followed by a fireworks display. Tryon Palace was originally built in 1770 and was the home of the British governor William Tryon. The building burned down in 1790. This replica was built using the exact plans and on the foundation of the original building. It is now a major historic and tourist location.

New Bern was the largest city in North Carolina during it’s time as the state’s first capital.

New Bern is also known as the place where Pepsi Cola originated. The Birthplace of Pepsi is located on the corner of Middle Street and Pollock Street. It is a popular attraction for visitors and was a focal point of the 300th Jubilee.

Elizabeth II, a replica 16th century merchant ship, was docked at the New Bern Grand Marina for the weekend. Visitors could tour the ship and get a first hand look at cross-sea travel of the 1500’s and how the crew lived and worked on the high seas.
In addition to the above, there was a parade and a cultural festival at Union Point Park on Saturday. Sunday featured a breakfast in the park and then closing ceremonies. Everyone can agree that New Bern has had a colorful first 300 years and we all look forward the the next 300!
